Walking along the road near my old studio at Westbourne Park, London, I saw this lump of tarmac that had been dug up for road works. The yellow line ran horizontally along the top. This drew my attention. I can’t resist piles of dug up tarmac. Barry Flanagan used to say he couldn’t resist a pile of sand from his time working on building site. I took the tarmac back to my studio, shaped the edges to make it square, and then decided to drill a small hole though it and place a lightbulb behind. If you stand right in front of it, you see the pin prick of light. Diamonds in the gutter.
