Nocturnal Stone

Purbeck Marble

Height 40 cm x Length 1.9 m

This was my first rotating sculpture. In a previous sculpture Sun Cog I had tried to get the central element to turn. I bought a racer bearing but did not use it. On receiving a delivery of Purbeck marble I placed the racer bearing under a tooth slab of Purbeck green using a broom stick to find the point of balance. Kicking the stone, it spun freely and I was amazed. It was a eureka moment. The ease with which it moved defied the weight of the material. It was magical and compelling.
