I have always liked the Death Star from Star Ward. Why a concrete planet is so iconic I don’t know. I think it is the familiarity of the sphere with the strangeness of indentation. I also like the eye is Odilon Redon’s print To Edgar Poe, The eye like a strange balloon goes to infinity.
I have used this eye motif in encaustic paintings. This symbolist work also looks forward science fiction imagery of the 20th Century. And Edgar Allan Poe was one of the fathers of the genre. Part of the lure of Sci Fi is the aspiration for a better place, a better time where our needs will be truly met. And normally this narrative is denied with in the story.
